Help with housing costs, state by state
If money is tight, there is probably more help available than you know about. These pages list what exists in your state, who runs it, and how to reach them.
Most of this help is not well advertised. Programs that pay for a ramp, a new roof, insulation, part of your energy bill, or a chunk of your property tax exist in nearly every state, and plenty of people who qualify never hear about them.
Each state page is organized the same way, in seven groups: home modification, home repair, weatherization, utility bills, property tax relief, insurance help, and options related to sharing your home. Every entry says whether taking in a home seeker would affect your eligibility, because that is the question we are asked most and the hardest one to find an answer to.
Choose your state
Several of the biggest programs are federal and work much the same everywhere. They are described on the nationwide programs page.

Where that website would not open for us, the entry is marked Not confirmed on the state page so you know to check it yourself. Amounts and deadlines change, so confirm with the program before you act on anything here.

A spare room can cover a lot of what these programs are trying to cover, and it comes with company rather than paperwork. It is worth considering before you sell, before you move, and before things get harder to manage alone.
